Questions about Irish immigration

Quick answers to help you understand your options and what to expect.

What are the main types of Irish visas available?

Ireland offers various visa and permission types including employment permits, student visas, family reunification visas, and short-stay visitor visas. Each has specific eligibility requirements and application processes.

How long does the Irish citizenship application process take?

Processing times vary based on application volumes and the complexity of each case. After a positive decision, you'll be invited to pay the certificate fee and attend a citizenship ceremony, where you receive your certificate of naturalisation. We can advise on realistic timelines when you apply.

What is required for the Irish citizenship application?

Applicants generally need 5 years of reckonable residence (residence that counts towards a citizenship application) in Ireland within the last 9 years, including 1 full year of continuous residence immediately before applying. Spouses and civil partners of Irish citizens can apply after 3 years of marriage or civil partnership with 3 years of reckonable residence. You must also be of good character, intend to continue living in Ireland, and attend a citizenship ceremony to make a declaration of fidelity. There is no language or citizenship test in Ireland.

What types of work permits are available in Ireland?

Ireland offers several types of employment permits, including the Critical Skills Employment Permit for high-demand occupations, the General Employment Permit, and the Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit. Spouses and de facto partners of Critical Skills permit holders can work without a separate permit. Since 15 May 2024, the same applies to spouses and de facto partners of General Employment Permit and Intra-Company Transfer permit holders. Certain other dependants apply for a Dependant/Partner/Spouse Employment Permit. Each has specific eligibility criteria and application requirements.

How do I apply for family reunification in Ireland?

Family reunification applications typically require proof of relationship, financial stability, suitable accommodation, and compliance with immigration requirements. The process varies depending on your status (EU/non-EU) and the family members you wish to bring to Ireland.

What happened to the Immigrant Investor Programme (IIP)?

The Immigrant Investor Programme closed to new applications on 15 February 2023, and Ireland currently has no general investor residence route. Applications submitted before the closure continue to be processed, and we can advise existing IIP holders on their permissions and renewals, or help you explore the residence options that are open to you.

What is the difference between temporary and permanent residence?

Temporary permissions are granted for specific periods and purposes (work, study and so on) and must be renewed. After 5 years (60 months) of residence on employment permit conditions, you may qualify for the Long Term Residency scheme, which grants a renewable 5-year permission. Permission to remain 'Without Condition As To Time' (Stamp 5), which has no time limit attached, generally requires 8 years (96 months) of legal residence. We can advise which route fits your situation.

Can I appeal if my visa application is refused?

Many immigration decisions can be appealed or reviewed, though strict time limits apply. Visa refusals can generally be appealed. Some decisions, such as deportation orders and citizenship refusals, have no formal appeal but can be challenged through a request to revoke the order or by judicial review. Our solicitors can assess the options in your case and represent you.

How can a solicitor help with my immigration case?

A solicitor provides legal expertise to navigate complex immigration regulations, prepares comprehensive applications, ensures documentation is complete and accurate, represents you in appeals if needed, and increases your chances of a successful outcome.

What are the common reasons for visa refusals?

Common reasons include incomplete documentation, insufficient financial resources, concerns about genuine purpose of visit, immigration history issues, or security concerns. A solicitor can help address these issues in initial applications or appeals.
